The US T30 Heavy Tank was a massive experimental American tank developed at the end of World War II to smash through heavy German fortifications. Weighing roughly 75 tons, it was one of the largest and heaviest armored vehicles ever built by the United States military. Only six pilot models were ever built.
The T30 project began in September 1944 alongside its sister project, the T29 Heavy Tank. The U.S. Army designed them specifically to counter the terrifying German Tiger II (King Tiger) and heavy concrete bunkers.However, because of severe engineering challenges and the sheer size of the vehicle, the first pilot models were not delivered until 1947—long after WWII had ended. With the war over, the military tested the prototypes but ultimately canceled the project in 1950 for several reasons:
- It was far too heavy for standard military bridges and transport vehicles.
- The two-piece ammunition made the rate of fire painfully slow.
- The massive engine consumed fuel too quickly, drastically limiting its operational range.
