HMS Calcutta was launched at Vickers shipyard on July 9, 1918, it was modified for air defense cruiser in 1939, deployed in the Mediterranean.
In 1940, Calcutta took part in Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of the British Forces from Dunkirk.
June 25, 1940, HMS Calcutta in Bordeaux Coast joined the Canadian destroyer HMCS Fraser and HMCS Restigouche to rescue 4000 of the German besieged French refugees. Because of large sea waves, the Calcutta and Fraser collided. Fraser eventually sank, 45 crew members were killed, and Calcutta had 19 people killed.
Calcutta continued to serve in the Mediterranean and was part of F Force. She assisted at the Battle of Crete with the evacuation of troops from Sfakia, however on June 1, 1941she was sunk by German Ju-88 bombers in the north of the Mediterranean waters of Alexandria, Egypt. 255 men were rescued by the Coventry and 107 were killed or missing.
