705373 1/350 USS Ohio BB-68

The USS Ohio was a grand idea that never came to fruition. It was to be one of five “super” battleships authorized in 1940 and cancelled in 1943 before the first keel had been laid.

Following the Battle of Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway, the Navy brass saw the writing on the wall. Aircraft carriers would, in coming days, be far more valuable and prized for their abilities and versatility than the battleship.

The cancelling of these Montana- class battleships, which would have been the most powerful Navy vessels of their time, foretold the shrinking future of the battleship. To portray an idea of this dreadnaughts would-be power, one of the many early plans called for a 64-ton trial displacement, a main battery of 42 6”/50 cal. guns, and a 38-gun secondary battery of 20 5” guns. Its powerplant was visualized as a 130,000 hp mammoth capable of 28 knots. It would also boast a new generation of fire control radar to enhance combat efficiency.
