The German Sd.Kfz. 184 Ferdinand (later renamed the Elefant) was a massive, 65-ton heavy tank destroyer deployed by the Wehrmacht during World War II.
Born out of an political and engineering blunder, it combined an incredibly powerful long-range gun with exceptionally thick armor. However, it became equally famous for its staggering mechanical failures and lack of mobility on the battlefield.
After the heavy losses at Kursk, the surviving 48 vehicles were recalled to factories in late 1943 for emergency modifications. Engineers added a ball-mounted MG 34 machine gun in the front hull for anti-infantry defense, a commander's cupola for better visibility, and an anti-magnetic Zimmerit paste coating.
In May 1944, Hitler officially ordered the upgraded vehicles to be renamed the Elefant. They spent the remainder of the war fighting defensive actions in Italy and on the Eastern Front before the last few units were destroyed defending Berlin in 1945.
